New Procedure for Parkinson’s Disease

Dr. Barrientos has recently taken the initiative to participate with neurologists of the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas, in a new FDA-approved treatment for advanced Parkinson's disease.

Duopa (Carbidopa/Levodopa enteral suspension) is an FDA-approved therapy, indicated for the treatment of motor fluctuations in patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease. Duopa is infused through a specially designed intestinal tube, endoscopically placed under anesthesia. Park Plaza Hospital has taken strives to become the center in Houston for placement of this intestinal tube, successfully hosting the FIRST patient in the state of Texas to receive this therapy. In addition, Park Plaza Hospital becomes the first facility in the Tenet Healthcare Corporation to participate in the implementation of this therapy.

In addition to this groundbreaking treatment, Dr. Ryan Barrientos also actively participates in the management of various gastrointestinal problems associated with Parkinson's disease, from gastroparesis to constipation.

New Therapy for Fecal Incontinence

Dr. Barrientos recently completed a comprehensive training and certification program in the management of fecal incontinence with the FDA-appoved medication, Solesta. It is an injectable outpatient treatment for patients 18 years or older with fecal incontinence who have failed conservative therapy. Solesta is a biocompatible tissue bulking agent, injected in the submucosal layer of the anal canal, consisting of a viscous combination of stabilized hyaluronic acid and dextranomer-linked beads.
